Hisayuki Hikage

(Assistant Professor)

I was born in Osaka in 1962. When I was in the sixth grade I began listening to a radio English conversation program and that was my first experineces with English. This language was one of my favorite subjects in junior high and high school days. At university, especially during freshman and sophomore years, I acted in several plays by British and American playwrights. I used to watch plays by professional actors and actresses at theaters, too. My major at university was American literature, focusing on John Steinbeck. I came to Reitaku University in 1990 and began to teach English and American literature (culture) in 1993. My main interests now are American western literature---Jack London, Frank Norris, Willa Cather---and some American women writers---Kate Chopin, Cather, Edith Wharton. I am also interested in how (American) literary works are made into films. In my seminar class I study some recent films (basically American ones) with the students. One of the 2002 graduates in my seminar class wrote a thesis on American Western films. Another one wrote about Mark Twain's "Tom Sawyer." I myself am working on Jack London and films at the moment.
